As the season changes and spring blooms emerge, so do the dreaded allergies. For parents, this can mean managing their symptoms and helping their children cope, especially when it comes to staying active. Here’s how you can navigate spring allergies and exercise.

Understanding Spring Allergies

Spring allergies are typically triggered by pollen from trees, grasses, and flowers. As these allergens fill the air, children may experience symptoms such as sneezing, coughing, watery eyes, and congestion. Understanding the triggers can help you better prepare and manage your child's allergies.

Choosing the Right Activities

Opt for indoor exercises during peak pollen times, such as early mornings and windy days when pollen counts are highest. Indoor activities like yoga, dance, or even home workout videos can keep your children active without exposing them to allergens.

Timing Outdoor Play

Encourage outdoor play when pollen counts are lower, typically after rain showers when the air is clearer. Late afternoon or early evening can also be better times for outdoor activities as pollen levels tend to decrease.

Location Matters

Select outdoor locations wisely. Parks with freshly cut grass or areas surrounding trees may exacerbate allergy symptoms. Opt for open spaces with minimal vegetation or consider indoor playgrounds as alternatives.

Pre-exercise Precautions

Before heading outdoors, have your child take allergy medication as their healthcare provider prescribes. Additionally, ensure they wear sunglasses to protect their eyes from pollen and consider using a saline nasal spray to rinse away allergens post-activity.

Listen to Your Child’s Body

Encourage open communication with your child about how they feel during and after physical activity. If allergy symptoms persist or worsen, modifying their exercise routine or consulting a healthcare professional may be necessary.
